Gov. Greg Abbott and the Texas Legislature may have ended their stalemate over property tax cuts, but the next fight is already brewing and could be even tougher to resolve.
The governor has pledged to call lawmakers back to Austin this fall to pass a school voucher bill after they failed to agree on one this spring. Vouchers, also known as education savings accounts, have been divisive among Republicans, pitting Abbott against 24 GOP holdouts in the House who have opposed the idea of diverting state funding away from public schools and to private institutions. Both sides say they have no intention of blinking.
“Hearts and minds change all the time, but right now, I expect the special session to last long enough that we’ll see the Christmas trees come up and down,” said Rep. Ken King, a Canadian Republican and ardent voucher opponent. “I think we’ve offered the governor what the votes are there in the House for, and it’s something smaller than what he wants.”
