Texas House committee passes bill to raise the age to purchase semiautomatic rifles

In an unexpected vote May 8, a Texas House committee advanced a bill that would raise the minimum age to purchase semiautomatic weapons.

The vote came two days after a gunman killed eight people at an outlet mall in Allen—and nearly a year after 19 students and two teachers were killed at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde.

House Bill 2744 has been pushed for months by the families of those who died in Uvalde. The bill’s author, Rep. Tracy King, represents Uvalde.
