Texas Senate approves bill to admit Stephen F. Austin State University into UT System

The Texas Senate unanimously approved a bill Monday that would admit Stephen F. Austin State University into the University of Texas System.

Senate Bill 1055, filed by Sen. Robert Nichols, R-Jacksonville, would “abolish” the Nacogdoches-based university and immediately incorporate the school into the UT System. The bill now heads to the Texas House, where the Committee on Higher Education has already advanced an identical bill, House Bill 2639, filed by Rep. Travis Clardy, R-Nacogdoches.

The House is scheduled to consider HB 2639 Thursday.
